Every business, regardless of size, needs someone asking the right questions, about direction, culture, performance and compliance. In most small businesses, that person is you.
This programme gives you the frameworks, tools and thinking time to govern your business with intention. Not as a box-ticking exercise, but as a practical discipline that makes everything else, your decisions, your team, your growth, more effective.
Most small business owners are 5% Governor, 25% Manager, 70% Operator, when their business would benefit from something closer to 20 / 40 / 40. This programme helps you make that shift, deliberately and sustainably.
What this means:
Good governance starts with being crystal clear about why your business exists, where it's going, and what it stands for. This is the foundation every other decision is built on.
Without a board, this means:
You build a written purpose statement, a one-page strategy and annual plan, and review them quarterly rather than waiting for a board to ask.
What this means:
The values, ethics and decision-making habits of the person at the top shape everything below them. Governance culture is how you lead, not just what you say, but what you actually do.
Without a board, this means:
You design your own leadership rhythms, decision rules and ethical frame, and build at least one trusted external sounding board to give you the challenge a board would provide.
What this means:
Someone needs to be watching the numbers, managing the risks and holding the team accountable. In a small business without a board, that someone is you, and this focus area gives you the tools to do it well.
Without a board, this means:
You use a dashboard, risk register and decision authority matrix to hold yourself and your team to account, with a regular rhythm that doesn't rely on your memory or mood.
What this means:
As a business owner or senior leader, you have legal and financial obligations, whether or not you have a board. This focus area ensures you know what they are and have a system to stay on top of them.
Without a board, this means:
You review your director duties, financial position, H&S obligations and conflicts of interest on a regular rhythm, not just when something goes wrong.
A structured coaching journey across 3–4 months. Each 90-minute session builds one piece of your governance system, practical, personalised and immediately applicable.
You complete the free governance self-audit before this session. Together we review your results, identify your most important gaps, and tailor the programme to your specific business, so every session is relevant to you, not generic. You'll leave with your governance profile and a clear programme roadmap.
Why does your business exist? Where is it going? Who does it serve? This session builds the strategic foundation that everything else in the programme connects back to. You'll clarify your purpose, articulate your vision and create a one-page strategy your whole business can act on.
How do you make decisions? What values actually guide your behaviour, not just what's on the wall? This session helps you build a deliberate leadership culture, design your decision-making framework, and establish the external sounding board that replaces the challenge function of a board.
What gets measured gets managed. This session builds your performance dashboard, risk register and team accountability structure, so you have clear visibility over what's working, what's at risk, and who owns what. No more managing by gut feel.
Your legal and financial obligations as a director or senior leader are real, and they don't go away just because you don't have a board. This session reviews your director duties, solvency position, financial reporting, H&S obligations and conflicts of interest, and builds a regular review rhythm.
With all four focus areas in place, this session steps back to see how they connect and reinforce each other in your specific business. We identify any remaining gaps and build your personal governance rhythm, the regular cadence that keeps everything running without adding to your workload.
The final session locks in your 90-day implementation plan with clear accountability. You'll leave with a complete, written governance system, built specifically for your business, and a concrete action plan for putting it into practice from day one.
Our 20-question governance self-audit. It takes 15 minutes to complete and gives you an honest picture of where your business governance is strong, and where it needs work.
There are no right or wrong answers. The audit is your starting point, not your report card, and it's the first step in your Discovery Session.
This programme is built directly on the Institute of Directors New Zealand Four Pillars of Governance Best Practice framework, the same framework used in the IoD Company Directors Course. You don't need a formal board structure to benefit from good governance. You just need to be intentional about how you lead, decide and oversee your business.
Sessions are available one-on-one in person at our Rolleston business hub, or online via video call, so location is never a barrier. A small cohort format (4–6 owners) is also available for those who value peer discussion alongside coaching.
Everything you need to know before booking your Discovery Session
Not at all, the programme is designed specifically for businesses without a board. The four focus areas are translated from board-level governance into the practical reality of an owner-operator. You are the governor. This programme helps you act like one.
The full programme runs across 3–4 months: one 60-minute Discovery Session, followed by six 90-minute coaching sessions. Sessions are typically spaced 2–3 weeks apart to give you time to implement between sessions.
Yes. Our Business Navigation and Strategy Development programmes focus on where the business is going and how. This programme focuses on how you lead and oversee the business, the structures, disciplines and rhythms that make good direction stick. Many clients do both, in either order.
Yes, all sessions are available online via video call, so you can be anywhere in New Zealand. In-person sessions are also available at our Rolleston business hub for clients in the Christchurch area.
The Institute of Directors NZ is the leading governance body in New Zealand. Their Four Pillars of Governance Best Practice is the framework taught to company directors across the country. By grounding this programme in that framework, your governance system is built on the same best practice used by New Zealand's best-run organisations, just right-sized for your business.
The 20-question audit gives you a score across all four focus areas and an overall governance score out of 100. Each result includes a personalised comment specific to your situation, and a clear recommended next step. It takes 15 minutes and there's no sign-up required.
